Radon barrier complete

The radon barrier was completed yesterday. The guys were on site for approx 2-3 hours. The cost of the barrier was €840 in the end. The blocks have arrived for the blocklayers to continue so I rang them yesterday and said we were ready for them now again. They didn't give a definite answer (the usual) but said they would look after it by end of week. I paid the guy who sunk the well-that was €2,900. I had budgeted for more on that so was pleased with the price in the end. My Dad thinks I am coming in below budget so far but I must spend some time doing an accurate working so I can be sure.

Better weather so better progress

The weather the week before last put a stop to any work being done that week. We got a good bit done this week though. Have been up the walls at work and haven't had the time to update this either in work or after!! The floors were packed this week. I have posted some pictures of this which I took today. There was 6 truck loads of '2 inch down' for this and then the sand for the top. My Dad was levelling the sand yesterday and day before as the groundworks guy was spreading the stuff with his JCB. I went to site this morning and thankfully everything was still in place after the winds last night. The garage base was dug out this week too. The radon barrier is being put down on Tuesday morning. The cost of this is €690. This is from a local guy from Grenagh, Blarney who was recommended by the blocklayers. Next then will be a layer of concrete, insulation and the underfloor heating pipes ............and then more concrete. Then the blocklayers can work away up to window level. On that note a rep from Munster Joinery called into the site a few weeks back to my Dad and gave a quote from the plans of €9k-thats for 19 windows and the front door. The whole kitchen area is all glass from floor to ceiling so I think that's a good quote but I will also get a quote from Classic windows. They are meant to be very dear though. Either way I will pay a visit to both places to check out their windows on display myself. I'm really looking at black PVC but may change my opinion on that. I don't know where I'm going to get the time-not enough hours in the day! I rang SOS heating too and told him we would most likely be ready for him in 2 weeks (weather permitting) and thankfully he was okay with this and said it suited him also. So overall things are moving along nicely and quicker than I expected. The only delays I've had are as a result of the weather (BOO!) ..........and not contractors who are proving very timely indeed! I must also get a detailed excel sheet of my costs to date up on this site when I have the chance.

Progress in pictures

I took a good few pictures at the weekend and have posted some of them tonight of the blockwork that was done last week. Nothing has been done yet this week due to the nasty weather. I have completed the SEI grant form for the solar panels and sent it off to SOS heating who I have decided to go with for the heating/plumbing. There is a grant of €1,500 for the solar panels which are coming in at approx €6k in total. They have to complete certain information on the form ie specifics of what they are installing. Dad went to the site today and he said some of the pointing on the blockwork has been eroded because of the weather so I rang the guys and they said they'd pop up and sort that out once the weather is favourable again!!

Back from Stockholm & blocks have started

Was in Stockholm since last Thursday and just flew in late last night. Got chance to visit site after dinner this evening. Pictures are not the best but I have them posted anyway.........it was going on 7pm so light was fading. Hope to get a few brighter ones before end of week!! Blocks started this morning. They had used 3 bags of the readymix mortar by lunchtime when my Dad visited. They had 3 more on site. The second heating quote has come in at €13k for the underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs and all the plumbing pipes etc .......... The solar panels are €6k extra. I'm going to go with this guy. Its SOS heating from Grenagh. Swedes love their houses so there were plenty of house shops to visit in Stockholm which I did.............and got some unusual and pretty cool stuff. If anyone is visiting try zone-denmark, Ahlens city...........just two of the better stores. Totally broke but I'm sure I'll enjoy looking at my purchases this time next year when I'm sitting inside...........even more broke with full mortgage drawn down ;-)

Blockwork continued
